A 48-year-old Salvadoran man died October 23, 2026 in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Folkston D. Ray ICE Processing Center in Georgia, while awaiting his first removal hearing, according to an ICE statement<\/a> published October 24.<\/p>\n

What ICE Says Happened<\/h2>\n

According to the agency, ICE officers in Newark arrested him on October 2 and issued him a notice to appear before an immigration judge. On October 8 he arrived in Folkston, where he was awaiting his first hearing.<\/p>\n

ICE indicates that at 1:46 a.m. on October 23, facility staff found him with a ligature around his neck and began resuscitation efforts. Charlton County paramedics continued care and pronounced him dead at 2:28 a.m.<\/p>\n

ICE has not publicly determined the cause of death. It says the case is under investigation and that an autopsy will establish the cause and manner of death.<\/p>\n

Criminal History According to the Agency<\/h2>\n

The statement notes that the man had convictions for aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of stolen property, and robbery, plus a drug possession charge. The text does not clarify whether that last charge resulted in a conviction. This information comes only from ICE and does not change the fact that the cause of death remains pending.<\/p>\n

Notifications and Care Standards<\/h2>\n

ICE says it reported the death to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Office of Inspector General, and the agency\u2019s Office of Professional Responsibility, and that it notifies Congress, nongovernmental organizations, and the media. The statement does not mention whether the family or a consulate was notified.<\/p>\n

The agency says its facilities conduct a medical, dental, and mental health evaluation within 12 hours of arrival and a full health assessment within 14 days, with medical appointments and 24-hour emergency care.<\/p>\n

What's next?<\/h2>\n

The autopsy and investigation results are still pending. ICE has not given a date for either. Other media and organizations have linked the case to detainee protests at that facility, but ICE\u2019s statement does not mention them, and that connection has not been confirmed by official sources.<\/p>\n
