The memorandum, under the Task Force Model, is published on the ICE website in a file whose name is dated February 26, 2025. The scan does not allow the signing date to be read.

A recent local report claims the county is preparing its police to cooperate with ICE. As of publication, neither the county nor ICE had confirmed a new announcement in the official sources consulted. What is documented is the current agreement and the program’s general rules.

What the Task Force Model is

The 287(g) program has three models, according to the ICE page. Under the Task Force Model, officers apply limited immigration authority while doing routine police work. ICE gives as an example identifying a person at a checkpoint for driving under the influence and sharing that information with the agency. An ICE supervisor decides the next steps.

The other two models are more restricted. The Jail Enforcement model is limited to people facing criminal charges inside the jail. The Warrant Service Officer model authorizes officers to serve and execute administrative warrants on people already in the agency’s custody.

Why Florida has so many agreements

Section 908.11 of the Florida Statutes requires sheriffs and heads of correctional facilities that operate county detention centers to sign a written agreement with ICE. The law does not require any particular model. Those who have not signed must report each quarter to the State Immigration Control Board.

Nationwide, ICE records 2,698 287(g) agreements in 38 states and 2 territories as of October 21, 2026: 1,942 under the Task Force Model, 574 Warrant Service Officer, and 182 Jail Enforcement, according to its official dashboard.

What is not confirmed

The text of the memorandum is a scanned document that could not be read, so this article does not detail its training, supervision, or duration requirements. It also could not be verified on ICE’s official list which other municipal police departments in the county have agreements or how many officers are certified. ICE does not list individual agencies on its dashboard.

Archive photo (2024): uniformed officers.
